Building up Pigmented Epoxy and Day Hatch

The next couple of days at the beginning of August were spent adding more layers of the coloured epoxy to the outside panels of the deck. More layers of electrician tape helped with that process.

The day hatch had to be located where the paddler could reach back without contorting himself. And since the deck was now glued to the hull, guessing the centre of the hatch took some measuring of the two bulkhead locations. I didn't have a jig saw to cut out the circle of plywood, so I used a drill and put multiple holes just inside the outer diameter of the day hatch. Once the rough opening was made, the orbital sander did a good job of smoothing the rough edges to the right diameter. Maybe easier than a jigsaw with less chance of cracking the plywood.

Note that with the Solace 16 XL, the day hatch does not sit flush on all sides of the hole. The photo from inside the cockpit illustrates that. The camber on the deck back of the cockpit is steep enough that an a special graphite epoxy job is required to seat the day hatch.
